The Ballylally Races
Ballylally racetrack is a small rundown country racecourse owned by the Lally family
and managed by Myles Lally. It faces closure until the unexpected arrival of a major sponsor on the scene, the Guinness Brewery. R. B Hickstead, the colourful 24 stone marketing director at the brewery, announces that he is going to sponsor a new race, a four and a half miles steeplechase rivaling the Aintree Grand National. It will be called the Ballylally Challenge. Horses from all over Ireland and England will compete for a massive purse. The deal will save the racecourse and the Lally family from bankruptcy. There is extensive publicity for the venture and an Indian prince arrives at the local training stables run by Helen O'Neill, Myles Lally's girlfriend. The prince has a grudge against the Guinness family and wants revenge. Winning the race and taking the Guinness prize money will be some compensation for past wrongs. There is trouble on the course in the run up to the race. A holy well is blocked off and the local priest leads protesters to the site. Then animal rights activists announce that they will stage a demonstration and stop the race. Hickstead's enemies at the Brewery campaign against him. A big time gambler comes on the scene and there is all kinds of trickery involving trainers, jockeys and horses. The Ballylally Challenge is a tumultous thrilling event with all the players determined to win by any means possible. Price: €18 / Stg£14 / USD$24 - Click to Buy |
