The Modern Irish Draught

This book is about the Irish Draught as it is today. It has been compiled from notes kept over a period of years by the author and from accounts submitted by breeders and owners.

While some notice has been taken of the historic ancestry of the breed the book in its main body has been divided into six families with modern ancestors: King of Diamonds, Clover Hill, Pride of Shaunlara, Ben Purple, Laughton and Slievenamon.

In this way the reader can readily identify modern pedigrees. Performance is an issue which is very firmly addressed. Details are given of important showjumping and eventing campaigners with Irish Draught blood.

The book is packed with information and its primary aim is to give breeders references and sources so that they can more readily identify the pedigrees and bloodlines of the stallions, mares and progeny which they encounter.

In its closing chapter the book offers controversial solutions to the current problems of declining numbers and the risk of losing genetic diversity.

It is a book which has been written with a purpose - to widen the knowledge and outlook of Irish horse lovers who have the burden of ensuring that the Irish Draught is not lost in the fateful years which lie ahead.
