A Spy in Dublin Major
Charlie Hennell is a middle aged M16 undercover agent in Dublin in the
1970s.He has an easy, unadventurous life in the run up to his retirement until one day in 1974 his station head orders him to pick out a location for a car bomb detonation. Raiders guided by British Intelligence are to come down to Dublin from Northern Ireland and set off a bomb in the centre of Dublin. The object is to force the Irish Government into action against the IRA which is running a dirty war in the northern part of the country. Hennell is appalled. He decides to intervene, go to the Irish with a story that the IRA is plotting to let off its own bomb in Dublin. If the Irish swallow this, he reasons, they will move on the IRA and there will be no need for the British to let off their bomb. But things don't work out that way. Hennell has to fight on two fronts, The Irish are after him as a spy. The British maintain that he is a traitor. Hennell's easy life is upended. He becomes entangled in a series of events which thrust him into the forefront of a campaign of subterfuge and deceit. He must utilize all his skills and cunning to stay alive.
