Pillars of Irish Breeding

The Irish Field - May 14th, 2005

Well known equestrian enthusiast and journalist Nicholas O'Hare has just completed his fifth book entitled Pillars of Irish Breeding.

Following O'Hare's successful publication of King of Diamonds, The Modern Irish Draught, The Irish Sport Horse and The Modern Connemara, this latest release is a unique gathering of 100 profiles of owners and breeders of stallions whom O'Hare has interviewed over the past 35 years.

Opening with a profile of the legendary O'Neill family of Slyguff Stud, former home to the world renowned King of Diamonds and Imperius, the following pages feature profiles on Slima Stud, Chantal Deon, Mary McCann, and Patricia Nicholson, breeder of many successful eventers, including former Badminton winner Eagle Lion.

Modern breeders are all too familiar with the achievements in the showing rings of the Co Wexford based Bowe family, as well as fellow showing experts Lady Hemphill, Elizabeth Petch and Eric Walsh, all of whom are featured.

Followers of foreign sires will be interested in features on Clem McMahon's French bred Hermes de Reve and Tom Jones Aldato, by Nimmerdor, while fans of the Irish horse can read about Edmund Burke, Western Promise, Errigal Flight and Sir Rivie amongst others.

The success of the Irish horse worldwide would not have been possible had it not been for the expertise of horsemen such as Willie Leahy and Jim Hurst, and horsewomen Iris Kellett and Hilary Greer. It is interviews with these legends that make Pillars of Breeding truly special.
