The Modern Irish Draught
The Irish Field - June 29, 2002
Breeding enthusiasts will be interested to hear that equestrian correspondent
Nicholas O' Hare's new book, The Modern Irish Draught, has just been
published. Compiled from notes going back over thirty years, along
with information submitted by owners and breeders, this fascinating
book reviews the breed by dividing it into six families, King of Diamonds,
Clover Hill, Pride of Shaunlara, Ben Purple, Laughton and Slievenamon,
giving readers a greater understanding of modern pedigrees.
Along with identifying competition horses based in Ireland and Europe
which have Irish Draught blood, the book also follows the successes
of many stallions based in America and beyond, one of those being
O'Leary's Irish Diamond by Glidawn Diamond, which is being campaigned
on both the American showjumping and dressage circuits.
The future of the Irish Draught is also discussed. The book gives
a detailed report on the current RID population and offers controversial
solutions to the problems of declining numbers. It is a valuable source
of information for anyone involved in breeding and a must for all
Irish Draught enthusiasts.
